I sit at my desk and write or edit anywhere between 4 to 8 hours a day. Sometimes a few hours on the weekend. I have a dual screen set up, a wrist rest for my keyboard and mouse, and a fancy ergonomic chair.
None of it helps.
I went to a seminar late last year and was speaking with a more seasoned medical writer who admitted that her body just couldn’t take the hours and hours in front of the computer anymore, so she started doing more webinars and speaking engagements. I completely understand. This career is starting to take a toll on my body. I am structurally unsound.
I am far more aware of my posture these days. There was a time I could get away with hunching over a laptop, getting deep into a writing or editing project. But no longer. I have to make myself sit up, check the angle of my knees and elbows and neck. Advil is my friend. Laptop work is intermittent and avoided whenever possible.
I try to get up and move around during the day, breaking up long stretches with walking the dog or just going up and down the stairs a few times. But I’ve really got to put more thought into my desk set up, given how many hours I sit here.
